How to Prepare for a Board Interview
This past week I reached mecca for board hopefuls – I was approached to join a board, and have been shortlisted for an interview.
It is a very proud, but short-lived, moment. Because now the fun starts – preparing for the face-to-face interview. And I thought it would be a great idea to share my preparation process with you all in the hope that you pick up some useful interview preparation tips. I will also share with you some of the questions I will likely ask during the interview in a future post (and once I have completed my research).
There are a number of pieces of information in general that you should look for as a potential director, and a number of things that I look for based around my skill-set – these unique skills are usually the reason why you will be approached to join a board.
You also want to ensure that you are sourcing your information from a variety of sources in order to get a well-rounded impression and understanding of the business and its industry.
I call my research process the “what-why-where” approach. If you like this process, feel free to print and reference this table in the future.
As you can see there is a lot of information to source and digest – you’re essentially riding a vertical learning curve! However, some of the information sources double up, and some documents I have already read through as part of my initial research prior to confirming my interest in joining the board. As with any interview though, and particularly for board positions, it pays to do your research.
